Chapter 7

Trent hated to invade Chloe's privacy by going through her purse. But it was either find her address that way or try to get Troy to give it to him out of her personnel file. Snatching her black leather wallet out of the mysterious depths of her female armament bag seemed the lesser of two evils. He even managed to avoid plucking out any scary-looking feminine products.

When he pulled up outside her house in Coral Springs, he made a few assumptions. First, Chloe hadn't exaggerated the modest circumstances from which she came. The house appeared neat, but had seen better days. An old Florida bungalow, its faded lime-green stucco exterior cried out for fresh paint, and its old-fashioned casement windows needed replacing.

Also, someone in the house had one bizarre liking for ceramic animals. The landscaping bed next to the front door was overrun with frolicking squirrels, chipmunks, alligators and hedgehogs. He expected Snow White to come skipping out of the house at any moment. Eyeing one cumbersome rabbit crushing the fronds of a really nice-looking sago palm, he stepped closer, but the door opened before he could save the poor plant.

"You're not the pizza guy." A teenage girl wearing thick glasses and a frown spoke to him from the front step.

"No, I don't come bearing pepperoni and mushrooms."

"Meat. Ugh," she said with a shudder. "Spinach, onions, and double garlic. Not that it's any of your business."

"Nope, not my business. Though I have to ask … you don't have a date tonight, do you? I mean, double garlic and onions? Or do you plan to scare off some vampires?"

"Just 'cause you're cute doesn't mean you can comment on my choice of pizza. Now who are you and what are you selling?"

He ignored the "cute" remark. He sensed it wasn't a compliment. "I'm not going to try to sell you something."

She smirked. "Sure you're not. Look, buddy, the blue-haired set in this neighborhood gets a little antsy about hunks in tight jeans going door to door peddling stuff."

"I'm really not a salesman," Trent began to explain.

"Well, you're not in a suit, so I guess you aren't here to try to save my soul from the fiery pit, either." She peered owlishly at him through the glasses. "Oh, wait a second, are you the guy who called a while ago looking for Chloe?" The girl broke into a smile. The sharp angles of her face softened, revealing a sparkle in blue eyes that he now realized looked like her sister's.

"Yeah. I'm Trent. I brought her purse." He held up Chloe's small bag.

"I'm Morgan, her sister. She's not here." She snickered. "I thought you were going to rip off her clothes, not her purse."

Remembering what he'd said when Morgan had answered Chloe's phone, Trent felt his face go red. Morgan saw. "You're even cuter when you blush. Come on in and wait for her."

As soon as they stepped in the door, a pizza delivery truck pulled up outside. Trent paid for the pizza.
